laura cipullo and ozempic

Everyone knows Ozempic. Everyone wants Ozempic.

There’s a sea of misinformation out there because medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have become so popular. But the real question is why? These aren’t necessarily brand-new medications but lately, we’ve seen them “prescribed” right and left and it leaves us wondering if it’s something we should consider.

Listen to the Episode Now

If this post resonates with you or makes you feel something, share it with a friend! My hope is that we can keep this important conversation going long after the post is over.

What are these medications for? Who should use them? Who shouldn’t use them? What are the side effects? Are we using them correctly? Is there a better way to navigate these medications? What’s the impact on other aspects of people’s lives? What are the consequences in the larger society?

There are so many questions that surround this topic and it’s a lot to navigate.

That’s exactly what we are diving into today. Whether you're a healthcare professional, a wellness enthusiast, or simply someone seeking clarity in the chaos, this is your golden ticket to enlightenment. From separating fact from fiction to navigating the nuances of effective treatment strategies, we're leaving no stone unturned.

Because let's face it, if we can't talk about it, how can we solve it?

In this episode, I’m joined by Laura Cipullo, a seasoned registered dietitian, diabetes care and education specialist, and all-around wellness guru (the real wellness, like overall wellness not just weight = wellness thing.). Together, we're unpacking the science behind GLP-1s, demystifying their role in regulating blood sugar, promoting weight loss, and even delaying stomach emptying.

Laura Cipullo is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian and Supervisor, 500-hour Yoga Teacher, and four-time author, with wellness practices in both NYC and NJ. She is a past president of the New York Chapter of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals and speaks nationally on this and other health and wellness subjects.

With over 25 years of clinical nutrition experience, Laura’s approach combines her credentialed expertise in nutrition, behavior change, the endocrine system, and psychology, with evidence-based science. While she teaches the benefits of eating organic, sustainable foods the majority of the time, she believes ‘all foods fit.’ Her clients love her compassionate, mindful, ‘wholistic’ approach to positive nutrition and her motto, “Eat Kale and Cupcakes™!” Laura helps her clients develop a neutral relationship with food and body, ultimately resulting in a positive eating experience.

In this episode, we’re diving into:

  • What are GLP-1 Medications?

  • What is Ozempic?

  • How are GLP-1 medications being used in the treatment of diabetes?

  • The popularity of GLP-1 medications in “obesity” medicine.

  • Lack of understanding about assessing eating disorders in the context of obesity medicine.

  • Potential risks and benefits of GLP-1 medications.

  • Risks of rapid weight loss using Ozempic and other medications.

  • An individualized approach to GLP-1 medications.

  • Integrating medication use with holistic approaches.

  • Benefits of gradual dosing and close monitoring of individuals on GLP-1 medications.

  • The impact of medications on the metabolism.

  • How medication may affect how the body responds to food, including insulin production and blood sugar levels.

  • The sustainability of metabolic changes once medication is discontinued.

  • The potential impact of medications marked for weight loss for individuals with eating disorders in larger bodies.

  • The need for providers to approach treatment without judgment or bias.

  • The importance of open communication and collaboration between patients and healthcare professionals.

So, grab your favorite snack (kale chips or cupcakes, your choice!), settle into your comfiest chair, and listen in!

"Everyone's body is so different. Everyone's metabolism is different. Everyone's microbiome is different." - Laura Cipullo

"I shouldn't judge you, shouldn't judge the eating disorder community, shouldn't be judging the people that are in whatever body right? We need to talk to them and see what is it that you're experiencing." - Laura Cipullo

"I don't think we have enough science for us to even really know like half of what's going on inside somebody." - Laura Cipullo

"We live in a world, especially within the eating disorder treatment community, that if you say the word obesity, you are already deemed as something bad, which is kind of a little silly because if there's a word out there, we can't ban it." - Rachelle Heinemann
