Why You Can't Think Your Way Out of Body Image

You've done the affirmations.

You've bought the comfortable clothes. You've unfollowed the accounts that made you feel worse. You've worked on speaking to yourself with more kindness, and you've probably noticed that some of it actually helps. Getting dressed doesn't feel quite as hard. The bad body image days don't hit quite as intensely. You feel a little more at peace than you did before.

And yet, something still feels unresolved.

That uncomfortable feeling keeps showing up, even after all the work you've put in. It's quieter some days and louder on others, but it never seems to disappear completely.

In this episode, I'm talking about why that happens. We're looking at why body image can be so persistent, why all the things we often recommend are still worth doing, and why they sometimes only take us so far. More importantly, we're exploring what poor body image may actually be pointing toward.

This conversation isn't about finding another body image tip or another affirmation to write on your mirror. It's about understanding why body image often becomes the place where deeper emotional experiences show up and what you can begin paying attention to instead.

If you've ever felt like you've been making progress while still carrying around the same underlying struggle, I think this episode will give you a completely different way of looking at it.

In this episode, I'm talking about:

  • Why body image can still feel like a daily struggle, even when you've done all the "right" things.

  • The difference between body image that's triggered by a specific event and body image that feels constant.

  • Why body image often becomes the place where deeper emotions settle.

  • Why affirmations, comfortable clothing, and supportive people can help without resolving what's underneath.

  • How overwhelming emotions can blend together until everything feels like one constant feeling.

  • Why learning to identify individual emotions can change the way you experience body image.

  • The messages many of us learned about expressing emotions and how those lessons follow us into adulthood.

  • How feeling unsafe expressing emotions can make taking up physical space feel uncomfortable, too.

  • The importance of getting curious about your emotional experiences instead of only focusing on your body.

  • Questions you can ask yourself to better understand your relationship with emotions.

  • Why emotional awareness is less about feeling good all the time and more about feeling less overwhelmed.

  • How organizing your emotional world can begin to shift the way you experience poor body image.

Quotes

"It's all about your body, but it's not about your body at all."

"The body is where something else sort of has gone to live."

"There is a difference between just sitting in the, 'I feel terrible' and organizing the inner experience."

"It's not just I feel angry and I'm not allowed to, it's I feel guilty for taking up space, and I'm also not allowed to feel guilty about that because that itself is taking up space."

"The body here isn't a separate problem, it's just the most concrete version of the problem that you're already having somewhere else."

"Ultimately, the goal here is not necessarily to feel amazing all the time, it's to feel more organized, to understand it a little bit more, to have more context."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I still struggle with body image after doing all the "right" things?

Because body image isn't always the actual problem. You can practice affirmations, wear clothes that feel good, and change the way you talk to yourself, and those things absolutely matter. They can make life feel a little easier. Sometimes, though, poor body image is carrying emotions that haven't had anywhere else to go. Until those emotions have a place to be understood, body image can continue to feel like the loudest part of the experience.

Can poor body image exist even if nothing triggers it?

Yes. For some people, body image spikes after a comment, a photo, or a stressful interaction. For others, it doesn't need a trigger at all. It can feel like it's simply there when you wake up. That constant background feeling often points to something deeper than a single bad body image day.

Why don't affirmations fix my body image?

Affirmations can be incredibly helpful, and they're worth using if they make things feel more manageable. They just aren't designed to resolve everything. If poor body image is connected to grief, shame, anger, or other emotions that haven't been processed, repeating positive statements won't automatically make those feelings disappear.

How are emotions connected to body image?

Emotions don't stop existing because we ignore them. When they're difficult to identify or express, they often collect into one overwhelming feeling. For many people, the body becomes the place where all of that distress shows up. It's visible, familiar, and easy to focus on, even when the real struggle started somewhere else.

Why do I always feel overwhelmed by my emotions?

Sometimes it isn't that you're feeling one huge emotion. It's that you're feeling several emotions at the same time without realizing it. Anger, guilt, sadness, disappointment, and shame can all blend together until everything simply feels terrible. Learning to separate those emotions can make them feel less overwhelming and much easier to understand.

How can I improve my body image in a lasting way?

Instead of asking only, "How do I feel about my body?" it can be helpful to ask, "What am I actually feeling right now?" Becoming more aware of your emotional experience, where those emotions came from, and what they're trying to communicate creates a very different starting point than trying to change your appearance or force yourself to think positively.

What's the goal if I never feel good about my body all the time?

The goal isn't to feel amazing every day. It's to understand yourself a little better each time difficult feelings show up. As you become more familiar with your emotions, they become less confusing and less consuming. Over time, that can change the way you experience your body because you're no longer carrying everything in one overwhelming feeling.
